The MEXT Scholarship 2022-2023 is a fully-funded scholarship for international students. This scholarship is available for bachelor, master, PhD and training courses. The MEXT scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, monthly housing allowance, and round-trip travel expenses from your home country to Japan.

The application cycle for a MEXT grant from the Japanese government is usually announced in April. However, this year the announcement of the application has been delayed due to COVID-19. However, most countries recently announced the 2021 MEXT Scholarship. No knowledge of the Japanese language and IELTS / TOEFL is required for this scholarship.

MEXT scholarship coverage

The MEXT Scholarship 2022 is a fully-funded scholarship for international students to study in Japan for free. This scholarship offers the following benefits to the recipient.
  • Allowances: monthly grant allowance, preparation allowance (rate 2021)
  • Tuition fees: Entrance examination fees, university tuition fees are paid through MEXT.
  • Travel costs: Transport to Japan: MEXT will cover your flight costs from your country to Japan. The plane ticket is an economy class ticket for the flight.
  • Accommodation: Accommodation for international students is provided by universities.

Selection criteria for the MEXT scholarship 2022

To qualify for the MEXT Scholarship 2022, a candidate must meet all of the following requirements.
  • Required language: English
  • Eligible Countries: All countries in the world
  • Applicants must be citizens of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
  • An applicant who is Japanese at the time of application is not eligible.
  • For PhD students: You must be at least 17 and 25 years old and have completed 12 years of training or a high school diploma from a competitive school (including potential graduates).
  • For Masters / PhD students: You must be under 35 and have a college degree (including potential graduates). Or you have completed 16 years / 18 years of training.
  • For student teachers: You must be under 35 years of age and have a university or pedagogical degree. You must have at least five years of active teaching experience in a primary, secondary or teacher training institution in your country.
  • For Japanese Studies students: Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old. Applicants must enrol in a university outside of Japan on their return to Japan as PhD students in faculties or schools relevant to the Japanese language or culture, and at home on their return. Must be recruited.

How do I apply for the MEXT scholarship 2022?

To apply for the MEXT Scholarship 2022, please follow the application guidelines below:
  • Find the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country here.
  • Visit the website of the Japanese embassy in your country. Under the Education / Scholarships tab, you can find MEXT Scholarships.
  • Download and fill out the MEXT scholarship application form.
  • Submit the required documents (list below) to the Japanese embassy in your country.
  • The written test is carried out by the Japanese embassy. Here you will find a written sample test with answers.
  • Then the candidates are interviewed.
  • Successful candidates will be notified by email or on the embassy website.

Required documents for the MEXT scholarship 2022.

(1) Application form for a MEXT scholarship.

(2) The highest degree is certified by an official stamp.
  • Applicants for a bachelor's program: 12 years of training.
  • Applicants for master’s degree: Bachelor’s degree
  • Applicants for the PhD program: Masters degree
  • Note: If the degree is not in English, a notarized copy of the English translation is required.
(3) The certificate of the highest grade, which is certified by an official stamp. (including grading system)
  • Applicants for a bachelor's program: 12 years of training.
  • Master’s degree applicants: Bachelor’s certificates.
  • Applicants for the PhD program: Master's transcripts.
  • Note: If the diploma is not written in English, there is or is a notarized copy of the translation in English.

(4) Two letters of recommendation: letters of recommendation to teachers/consultants/employers (who can assess your academic achievements and your research potential) must be in English. (for research students)

(8) Explanation of the curriculum/goal. The curriculum is written in English. The basic content includes application motivation, educational / research background and prospective studies at the APU. (for research students)

(9) English Language Proficiency Document: Students whose language institute was in English can submit proof of English at their home university and are exempt from the language test.
